Private music instruction is proven to be the most effective way to enhance and rapidly develop student’s talents and abilities. We have students of all ages! Beginners to advanced: our youngest private student is 4 years, while we’ve had students in their 70’s. One is never too old to start! Though not obligated, parents are encouraged and welcome to attend lessons any time. Whether or not parents are musically inclined, by taking part in the lessons and adopting an active role in their child’s education, the instructor, parent and student develop a team that further encourages success. Our recitals give students the chance to share music with family and friends. Though performance is not required at the recital, it is strongly encouraged as performing can be a great learning factor in private lessons.

Piano

Piano is the foundation of learning music, especially for young children. The development of ear training, note reading, rhythm and musicianship, accompanied with proper technique, further defines fine motor skills, while utilizing gross motor skills.

We recommend 4-5 years is the earliest to begin private lessons, as longer attention spans and the ability to retain materials is becoming easier at this age. Programs such as Children’s Music Academy and Kindermusik are highly recommended, exceptional options for very young children as they can gain a solid foundation that hones in on their musical interests and talents. Meanwhile, adults – be brave and obtain your goals! Numerous adult students of all ages are enrolled at our studio.

Acquired piano skills provide a fantastic comprehensive knowledge of music that can later be applied to any and all instruments and styles of music. Playing the piano allows musicians of other instrument groups the ability to learn the foundations of music theory and thus, apply it to your respective instrument.

Students in Piano Classes also commonly enroll in Theory Classes and Treble Maker Choir.

Strings

Preferably, we begin students no younger than 4 years of age to allow for adequate maturity and appropriate attention span, thus, achieving a productive and increased learning curve. Certainly courses such as Children’s Music Academy and/or Kindermusik will introduce the basic foundation of music, which in turn eases the challenges of starting an instrument that requires much physical technique and attention at the onset.

The most common methods of teaching are Suzuki and Traditional. Though some of our instructors are fully trained, certified Suzuki instructors, we tend to incorporate the Suzuki repertoire and methods in combination with traditional materials to ensure full ability to read music when students are introduced to ensembles whether in our studio or in a classroom setting at school.

For those students interested in fiddling and bluegrass styles, we strive to individual lessons to meet student’s goal, yet also incorporate proper technique and attention to theory.

Students in String Classes also commonly enroll in Theory Classes and String Ensemble.

Guitar

Guitar lessons are offered for a wide variety of ages, levels and styles of guitar playing and performance. Students may choose between classical, jazz, rock and/or blues guitar. Generally we suggest 10 years and older for private lessons. Playing the guitar requires pressure on the fingertips while pressing strings down. Since younger students have smaller hands, this can pose as a challenge for some. As a result, some of our staff are able to assist younger students (ages 5 – 10 years) with the basic foundation of theory and guitar technique in private lessons. Another recommendation is Children’s Music Academy – a program that primarily focuses on piano skills, however, toward the end of the curriculum, incorporates guitar skills as well. The development and understanding of basic piano/theory skills will enhance the learning for guitar lessons when they have reached the appropriate age.

Our guitar lessons provide students with the opportunity to not only learn favorite songs, but also learn fundamentals of music and guitar technique, including reading music/notation, music theory and composition.

Voice

Suitable for singers of a variety of ages and experience levels, our vocal instruction emphasizes the development of proper vocal technique to protect the voice, improve sound production and gain confidence for personal enjoyment and/or public performance. Students learn basic posture, breathing and diction, with emphasis on stage etiquette, poise and presence. Typically, 10 years of age is suitable for private voice lessons. Due to the physical nature (e.g., proper breathing technique, development of the vocal chords and lung capacity, etc.), the young body is often not yet physically ready for the rigors of vocal technique. For students younger than 10 years, we strongly encourage enrolling in our “Junior Treble Maker” show choir. This opportunity provides a group experience, but can also play upon the skills of intonation and blending with one another.

Enrolled voice students, 10 years and older, are encouraged to participate in the “Treble Maker” Show Choir that includes choreography. Incorporated workshops prepare students for auditions, with a grand finale of staged music theatre scenes. We also strongly encourage our voice students to take piano lessons, in acquire a basic theory foundation of note reading, rhythm and understanding of musical symbols.

Brass & Woodwinds

Due to lung capacity demands, and dependent upon the size of the selected instrument choice, our experience has found it best to begin woodwind and brass students no younger than nine years of age. We always recommend that a student consider piano lessons prior to initiating a brass or woodwind instrument to acquire the basic foundation of rhythms, note reading and symbol identification.

Students in Brass & Woodwinds Classes also commonly enroll in Theory Classes.

Percussion

Generally 8 years old is a good starting point for our drum students. Factors to consider in determining the readiness of a student will rely on their physical size: Does their leg span allow for reaching the pedals; Do their arms comfortably reach the cymbals? Our drum lessons concentrate on time awareness and the development of consistent technique. We accept drum students of varied experience and levels of ability.

Students in Brass & Woodwinds Classes also commonly enroll in Theory Classes and Rhythm Group Class.
